Textual Analysis

Task: Write a well-constructed paragraph analyzing Kool A.D.'s use of language. You should be incorporating evidence from the text, as well as using concepts and terminology from today's class.

In his article "How to Pay for a Baby", Kool A.D's writing style would be the use of the diction of colloquialism, and hints of slang, in order to implement humor in a rather serious subject. This 'rather serious subject' would be how to take care of a baby and "pay" for it. It is quite evident that Kool A.D's main diction is colloquialism, from his specific use of language such as referring to money as "yaper", "feddy" and etc., additionally he would refer to the reader as "doggie" and would use contractions such as "y'all", these are informal terms that one could use in a day-to-day conversation with a friend. This low diction can be associated with the social dialect of people who are less educated and live in a rural area. One may be even able to narrow the geographical location of the writer and identify their regional dialect, from his use of the contraction of "y'all", as this contraction is widely known to be used by southerners in America. However, this can be disapproved, as "y'all" is a somewhat of a common 'word' used by different types of people. Although, one can be certain that the author's regiolect is that belonging to a North-American country. This is due to the fact that the 'slang' used is of a diction that is commonly used by 'Americans', words and phrases such as "Books go hard" and "I'mma keep it 100 with y'all" are often used by people living in that region. Moreover, the author's mentioning of capitalism in "forced to be enslaved by capitalism like the rest of us", can also be another indication of the author's regiolect and geographical location. While, it was mentioned previously that the diction that the author used is that one used by people commonly with a lesser education, the author's use with it is somewhat satirical, as he shows instances of self-awareness and social awareness. Kool A.D. mentions that one way to make money is to "write a parenting column", this a presentation of self-awareness, as the author is being meta. An instance of social awareness is Kool A.D.'s mentioning of the aforementioned capitalism statement and his 'rant' about the 'arbitrary" concepts in the government. This can give the conclusion that the author is adding a satirical take, another concept that presents self and social awareness, to humor the reader about a rather topic that people have great concern over ("paying for a child").
