Part 1-Bio

Provide your readers with a little background about you.

  • What about your interests? What do you care about?

  • What role does language have in your life?

  • Why do you think it is important to study language?

  • Have you ever felt excluded due to language barriers?
I am Mohammed AL Hammadi. I was born in the UAE, but I spent a good half of my life in good ole' America. When I was about 2 months old, my family moved to Alabama and lived there for around 5 years. We then went back to UAE. Half-way through 5th grade, my family moved to America, again. This time it was two years in Massachusetts. I finally came back for good in grade 7.
I would say my interests would be very art-oriented. I am very fascinated by film and theatre. In fact, I have taken a summer program that taught foundations of how to make a film and I got to make my own, albeit it is only one minute, film. In my free time, I would often either play video games or do research on my interests. As stated before, film and theatre are some of my interests, but I also like philosophy, psychology, criminology, and physics.

I believe that for everyone, the role of language is a very important one for everyone, and I am certainly part of "everyone". Languages help us to communicate with each other effectively and we humans are social beings, so communication is quite integral to functional human life. I, personally, (like most people) use language every day, in school, I would speak English, while outside with family and (some) friends, I would speak in Arabic.

As mentioned previously, language is an integral part of human life. So by studying it and understanding, you will be able to express your ideas much better than if you didn't. Additionally, studying language can give you a better understanding of the culture or history of countries that have such language as a mother tongue.

No, I have never felt excluded from language barriers. I have barely come across any situations which have language barriers; I am bilingual, speaking both English and Arabic. And from the places I have lived in and visited, those cities and countries the main languages are languages I am fluent in.

  1. I liked your sentence, "language is an integral part of human life". It stood out to me because it expresses language's importance and fundamentality in a being's social life. I can agree with that statement and to your explanation in the sentence afterwards. Also, what kind of differences do you see between the American culture and the Emirati culture? Since I've never witnessed the perspective of an Emirati living abroad.

  2. This was an insightful introductory post. Like Noora, I think it would be interesting to know more about your experience towards language growing up in such different cultures. Not only the UAE and the USA, but even the difference between Alabama and Massachusetts.
